Ukiyo-e print (Nishiki-e), or water-based woodcut, is a traditional Japanese print technique. “Ukiyo-e are paintings and prints that take as their subject matter the ukiyo, the floating world, which is to say, the real world of today in which people actually live. Created between the latter half of the seventeenth through the early twenties centuries, most ukiyo-e were woodblock prints, mass produced for enjoyment by ordinary people, not the wealthy or high in status.” Introduction to Ukiyo-e.
