Visiting Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection of the John M. Flaxman Library in Chicago

School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Together with my friend Stephen Murphy and Bob Tanner we have visited the “Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection” of the John M. Flaxman Library in Chicago. It is one of the biggest artist’s book collection in USA, so it was my big dream to visit this Collection, to see the artist’s books and to talk with the stuff of the Collection.

In the John M. Flaxman Library we met Special collection manager Mrs. April Sheridan and Mr. Nick Ferreira. Here we were talking about artist’s books, about our activity in artist’s book movement and about the exhibition of the “8th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2018” opened in the “Evanston Art Center” in USA.

I donated few catalogues of the “International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius” to the John M. Flaxman Library. We look forward to further collaboration.

The Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection was established in 1989 to honour the late Joan Flasch, a bookbinder and artist who worked in a number of positions at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

“The Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection (JFABC) digital library is an online guide and finding aid for the rich collection of artists’ publications available in Flaxman Library Special Collections. The JFABC brings together close to ten thousand artists’ publications in all formats and media including: books, zines, multiples, video and audio recordings, digital works, periodicals, and other intimate works of art created by artists of local, national, and international significance. Focusing on materials published from the 1960s to the present, it is complemented by collections of reference works and exhibition catalogues to support in-depth research on artists’ publishing”.

The John M. Flaxman Library belongs to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

“For more than 150 years, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) has been a leader in educating the world’s most influential artists, designers, and scholars. Located in downtown Chicago with a fine arts graduate program consistently ranking among the top programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, SAIC provides an interdisciplinary approach to art and design as well as world-class resources, including the Art Institute of Chicago museum, on-campus galleries, and state-of-the-art facilities.
