Artist’s Book Lecture “Structures of Artist’s Book”
Time: 7 November 2018
Location: Sungshin Woman’s University, Seoul, Republic of Korea
The “Sungshin Woman’s University” in Seoul invited Prof. Kestutis Vasiliunas from Graphic Department / Vilnius Academy of Arts to give the lecture on theme “Structures of Artist’s Book” and to talk with the students about artist’s books.
The lecture “Structures of Artist’s Book” was about how a world art history and history of book inspired artist’s book creators to use old and new structures, forms and bindings for creating contemporary artist’s books. If we think that the history of artist’s book started from William Blake, we are not right. “Songs of Innocence and of Experience” by William Blake first printed in 1789 was not the first artist’s book, like the “Bible” of Gutenberg was not first printed book, even many people believe in it… I’m wondering how different cultures are interacting with each other, how our past affects the present and the future. So, it is normal that we think and look back at our history of culture to choose the right structure for our artist’s book. Sometimes we change the structure, modified the binding or create strange forms of book. But we must not forget that there were other great artists before us.
What we say more about Korea? – Wonderful country with old history, with very kind people, beautiful nature and very delicious food. Korea – modern country with new technologies, here are very clean and safe and very peaceful. And what is fantastic – absolute silence in metro, on the street, on in the airplain with 300 passengers…
It was very nice to return back to Korea after 11 years.
